George Zimmerman vs Marissa Alexander

By: ROZZ Editorial

Background

On February 26, 2012, Zimmerman fatally shot 17-year-old African American, high school student Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida. Although Trayvon Martin was unarmed, the police chief Bill Lee Jr (fired months after incident), said that Zimmerman was released because there was no evidence to refute Zimmerman's claim of having acted in self-defense and that under Florida's Stand Your Ground statute, the police were prohibited by law from making an arrest. The police chief also said that Zimmerman had a right to defend himself with lethal force (after being told specifically not to engage by 911).

Marissa Alexander was the victim of domestic abuse by her now estranged husband, Rico Gray. On August 1 2010 Marissa felt her life was in danger after receiving threats from her husband and after a failed attempt to escape she took her gun from her vehicle and fired a single warning shot in the direction of her husband. A jury convicted her in twelve (12) minutes and because of the Florida 10-20-Life mandatory minimum statute, she was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Update as of October 2015

On July 13, 2013, a jury acquitted Zimmerman of the charges of second-degree murder and manslaughter.

George Zimmerman continues to be a nuisance to society and complaints have been filed by both his estranged wife and girlfriend in 2013. On September 28, 2015, Zimmerman retweeted an evidence photograph of Trayvon Martin's body taken at the scene of the shooting.

On Tuesday, January 27, 2015, Alexander was released from a Jacksonville jail under a plea deal that capped her sentence to the three years she had already served. She pleaded guilty to three counts of aggravated assault for firing a shot in the direction of her husband. She also agreed to serve two years of house arrest, wearing an ankle monitor. She will be allowed to work, attend classes and take her children to school and medical appointments.

What do you think? Are the rules and laws governing our societies "subjective" or are the people themselves damaged?
