Serena Williams: Arguably the best Tennis player ever!

By: ROZZ Editorial

With win after win, after win there is no doubt in my mind that Serena Williams is one of the best athletes in the world, if not the best!

Serena holds the most major singles, doubles, and mixed doubles titles combined amongst active players, male or female. Serena is also the holder of all four majors for the first time since she had that honour back in 2003, putting her well within sight of Steffi Graf's 22 majors, as well as Margaret Court's all-time mark of 24 Grand Slam singles titles.

Then why are some persons, including the media, downplaying Serena's skills and successes? Can't an African American woman be applauded for her determination and hard work paying off? What is also odd is that the colour of her skin trumps the fact that she is an American. I would think fellow Americans would be able to put aside their racist stupidity long enough to acknowledge that an American is dominating in World tennis. Let the "star-spangled-banner" fly high in support of Serena Williams...but sadly no. Not even Pride and Love of country can bring us together! This is a very sad day indeed.

As of July 13 2015, Serena stands at number 1 in the Women Singles rankings and yet does not have as many endorsements as number 2, Russian Maria Sharapova who earns almost twice as much as Serena from endorsements and appearances, despite only one-quarter the singles Grand Slam wins.

Double Standards

We thought we would add 2 more "funny", but not so funny, scenarios to the mix. Bruce Jenner aka Caitlyn Jenner and tennis professional, Samantha Stosur.

Caitlyn Jenner ESPY Awards Caitlyn Jenner was awarded the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPYS on July 16, 2015. Instead of being ridiculed, Caitlyn Jenner is being lauded as a hero for being strong and for accepting who he (or she) really is. How can an ACTUAL woman (Serena) be ridiculed for "looking like a man" and a man be praised for transforming into a woman? What a twisted world we live in!
Samantha Stosur Then there is 31 year old, Australian Samantha Stosur. Sam, as she is referred to, is just as muscular as Serena and does not have nearly as many feminine curves and yet her body is not made fun of in the media. Instead, she is rightly recognised for her success in the tennis world which in no way matches up (pun intended) against Serena's clearly more substantial victories.
Is this is a case of double standard? Is Serena being unfairly thrashed in the media simply because she is African American? I am in no way saying we should ridicule Caitlyn Jenner (although it's hard not to) and I am definitely NOT saying Samantha's body should be the focus of media attention. On the contrary, let each person be known for the hard work and effort they put into being great at what they do...regardless of the colour of their skin, their gender or their sexual preference. Give them ALL the support and appreciation they deserve.
