Why are black men and women thinking that their hair (and their culture by extension) is any less beautiful then the hair of a white, Indian or Asian person?
Black hair may be more difficult to manage and may appear coarser than hair of other races but that doesn't make it any less beautiful. In fact, just the opposite! Natural, unprocessed hair is unique, strong and quite frankly stands out!
In this day in age it's surprising to see any institution trying to prevent proud students from wearing the "Twist Out" style. One such case exists at Harrison College in Barbados. Principal of Harrison College, Juanita Wade, strongly disapproves of having some female student wearing the natural style calling it "flamboyant" and "inappropriate for school".
I see this as a huge step backwards for black culture and especially black women. We should be standing with our heads head high (literally and figuratively) embracing our beautiful hair and everything that is good about being a black person. We should be encouraging our black females to be proud of who they are! Once groomed, any child should be allowed to enter school and participate in classes. I dare to say that one's choice of hairstyle does not prevent you from being a scholar!
The words of the principal sparked such an outrage amongst Barbadians that a petition was initiated to prevent the banning of this hairstyle. The petition is now closed but it's great to see persons standing up not only for their culture but also freedom of expression.
We've come so far as to have kids' dolls created in the image of a black person with black hair.

Kudos to all Black people who are able to take good care of their beautiful black hair. Wear it proud! |
